Reader's letter of the day

From The Metro:

So the government will give me £2,000 part-exchange on my old car? If I could afford a finance deal on a new car, why would I run a banger in the first place?

Jim, Yorkshire.

Which is pretty much what everybody else said when I posted on this yesterday, bearing in mind it's only £1,000 that the 'government' (i.e. the taxpayer) pays anyway, not £2,000.

Let us be kind to the one eyed Jock, and assume that this scheme will result in people rushing to trade in old cars agasinst new ones (which, as you have pointed out, it won't).

As you say, the only people who will be able to do this would be the better off. Those without the cash / credit, will not be able to take advantage of this offer. So what happens? By putting a £2000 minimum value on older cars, and then reducing the supply by crushing them, what will happen to their value? Obviously, it would increase.

So this scheme will assist the 'wealthy' to get cheap cars at the expense of the least wealthy, possibly making the least wealthy less mobile and thus less employable, and thus even less wealthy.

So, even if the scheme did function, which it won't, it's a total crock.

Genius.

My car is 12 years old. It is also a GS 300 Lexus. Still a luxurious car. Never goes wrong! What is my incentive to change it? Also it does not attract a stupid road tax either. I mean that although the road tax is still pretty big when you consider how much isn't actually spent on maintaining and improving this infrastructure it isn't at the levels that that Bastard Darling announced last year. I might get another Lexus, but it would be a second hand one. I'm not paying £60 grand for a bloody car when I can get the same car 3 years old for bugger all in comparison. This £2K is of no relevance to me. I always make sure the Mrs has a new car every 3 years and I always buy a second hand luxury one. I've always fancied a Landy Defender though.

Mr S, excellent analysis! The wealthy come out slightly ahead, those at the bottom end up slightly worse off. That's what Nulabour is all about.

I suspect there will be a brisk trade at car auctions of people buying a 2nd car for £150 a month before they get a new one.

Really, if they want to be Green they should have introduced a bike scrappage scheme, so we could all trade in the ancient boneshakers from our garages and buy mountain bikes, or racing bikes, or whatever will get us out taking more exercise.

Me; four old bikes? Funny you should mention that.
