Its hardly surprising that it worked for 4 weeks, most drivers will be so confused they will slow down. Lets hope it is still an improvement after a year.
Something similar happened with the introduction of mini roundabouts. From memory there was uproar when they were introduced on a temporary basis, with drivers claiming they were dangerous. The reverse turned out to be true and drivers slowed down so much accidents were reduced and mini roundabouts became a permanent feature.
One word: Drachten.
